Trusting God in a Season of Uncertainty
When Worry Feels Real
When we talk about trusting God, many of us imagine a calm, settled confidence. That we would be untouched by fear or worry. But real life rarely feels that steady. In fact, trust often grows in the same soil where uncertainty lives.
I learned that early. As a child, I once spent an afternoon guarding a tiny crack in our living-room window, convinced danger would sneak in through that dime-sized flaw. My worry wasn’t based in reality, but it felt real.
Faith in the Midst of Uncertainty
The Christmas story gently reminds us that trust doesn’t require perfect calm. It begins right in the midst of our questions.
In Luke 1, when the angel appears to Mary, her first reaction isn’t serenity. It’s confusion and disturbance. The news was overwhelming and unexplained. Yet in the middle of that emotional swirl, Mary chose trust: “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” Her circumstances didn’t suddenly make sense. Her fear didn’t evaporate. She trusted God while the uncertainty was still present.
Joseph faced a similar moment. Learning that Mary was pregnant left him worried and unsure of how to move forward. His initial response came from care and concern. But when God spoke, Joseph responded with trust, not because the path became easy, but because he sensed God’s direction.
These moments show us that trust is not the absence of worry; it is the decision to lean on God in the midst of it.
When the Waiting Room Is a Parking Lot
I was reminded of this again several years ago when my wife underwent emergency surgery during the first weeks of COVID-19. Hospital restrictions meant I couldn’t go inside. Instead, I sat in a parking lot for seven hours with no updates, no timeline, and no certainty that everything would be okay. Worry was unavoidable. Yet somewhere in that long, quiet wait, I sensed God’s nearness. God was near me, strong enough to steady me, even as worry continued to rise and fall.
Trust That Carries You Through the Hard Stuff
Many of us live in that same tension. We hope for peace, yet the realities of life tug hard at our hearts. Bills still need to be paid. Doctors still call with results. Relationships still strain. The cracks in the window feel larger than they are.
Trust doesn’t ignore these things. Trust simply remembers that God is present within them.
This season, if your heart feels crowded with uncertainty, take a breath. You don’t need to eliminate fear before you turn toward God. You don’t need to solve your life before you lean on Him.
Trust begins right where you are: confused, anxious, hopeful, weary.
And God meets you there, offering a peace that doesn’t wait for everything to be okay.
