As I think about my time as being an elder, one main thing comes to my mind: I see GOD AT
WORK.
During my first term, the elder board was much more involved administratively in the church. It
was part of our job to make sure things happened that had been planned to further the ministry
of Cornerstone. This was also true in the first part of my second term.
With the change of our bylaws, administrative tasks were no longer the focus for the elders.
Execution of programs and activities were given to the ministry teams, letting the elder board
focus on the church’s ministry and have more time to help the pastor.
However, in both situations the thing that I saw happening was God being at work every time.
Whether the board was working through a personnel issue, writing a new vision or
mission statement, or dealing with a member issue, I could see and feel God at work.
With the changing of people in these positions, many times I wondered how the new team
would accomplish things. However, each person had something to add and we worked through
different situations–some of which were tough. Additionally, I could see God working
through each of us and people being willing to listen to Him.
Elders were coming to meetings about a situation using the same scripture for dealing with the
situation. That is GOD AT WORK!
One person on the board would have a completely different idea about how to handle a situation
than the rest of the board. However, after we talked about it, we all agreed with that person.
That is GOD AT WORK!
The main thing to remember is that if one has patience, that person will see God at work.
Experiencing God at work in a meeting like this is powerful and exhilarating, a feeling like no
other feeling!
